Granddaddy Purple by Estes Farms

Granddaddy Purple aka GDP was first introduced to the world in 2003, when esteemed-grower and horticulturalist Ken Estes crossed together Big Bud and Purple Urkle. Ever since its introduction, GDP has become a California staple that is cherished for its uplifting effects and complex grape and berry-like flavours. The sweet, fruity terpene profile of Granddaddy Purple and its deep, purple hues are acquired from its Purple Urkle lineage while the large, dense bud structure is a feature passed on from its Big Bud genetics. THC levels for GDP can range from anywhere between 16%-28% on the higher end of the spectrum. These numbers should be no surprise, once you take a look at the crystal-covered buds that speak for themselves. The high of Grandaddy Purple is very characteristically indica – with its fast-acting and long-lasting effects, GDP is known for its balanced high that delivers serene relaxation and an uplifting surge of energy or euphoria.

Here comes big daddy! Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Granddaddy Purple, also known as Granddaddy Purps or simply GDP, was first created by Ken Estes of Estes Farms back in ‘03. One of the most popular and sought after indica strains on the west coast, this potent purple strain was produced by crossbreeding two other indica favourites, Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Granddaddy Purple’s fantastic genetics can be attributed to its familial lineage, and have further made it a popular strain for crossbreeding and creating new hybrids, such as the Candyland and The Loops strains. With a fruity flavour profile and strong, heavy hitting high, this standout strain is a crowd pleaser amongst both indica and sativa lovers for its full-bodied effects, array of medical benefits and great taste!

Despite being an indica-dominant strain, Granddaddy Purple also offers some sativa qualities as users will experience both a cerebral and physical body high. Initially, a euphoric head rush will wash over your mind and body, and users ought to beware of how much to consume even after the first couple tokes as this strain packs quite a heavy and powerful punch! As the high progresses, users will enter a state of happiness and deep relaxation, feeling a smooth, calming body buzz and bouts of psychedelia. Due to Granddaddy Purple’s euphoric qualities, the strain is often used to help remedy depression, anxiety, stress and PTSD. It has been reported to help with appetite loss, and its relaxing effects also make it ideal for medical users looking to alleviate chronic pains, migraines or insomnia. With such deep relaxation on the mind and body, Granddaddy Purple is best suited for nighttime usage.

THC Content

Granddaddy Purple is an indica-dominant hybrid with a ratio of 70% indica dominance to 30% sativa. On average, it measures from 20% to a whopping high of 27% in THC levels with 1% CBD. Its parent, Big Bud, is also indica dominant with 85%:15% and 23%-26% THC; while GDP’s other parent, Purple Urkle, another Californian native strain, trends at 18%-21% THC on average as a balanced 50%:50% hybrid. Its child, The Loops, is another indica dominant hybrid with an average of 22% THC; its other child, Candyland, is actually a sativa dominant hybrid with an impressive 24% – 29% THC average, 1% CBD and 1% CBN. While Granddaddy Purple has quite a big family tree, it is often compared and confused with Grape Ape, which is yet another grapey, purple indica that is crossed between Mendocino Purps, Skunk, and an Afghani landrace.

Appearance & Aroma

One of the most beautiful strains out there, the appearance of Granddaddy Purple screams luxury. These buds are densely packed and are on the larger side, and bloom in varying shades and intensities of beautiful purple hues, traits that it borrows from Purple Urkle and Big Bud. They are speckled with bright orange hairs, and further coated in a thick and sticky layer of resinous white, crystal-like trichomes. In common with other purple strains, the Granddaddy Purple is naturally fruity and berry-like in aroma and flavour, particularly tasting like super sweet grapes that are nicely complemented by a refreshingly earth pine and hash spices, an indicator of its indica lineage!
